Cynthia Zhou is a principal associate in the tax department of Shanghai office. She has extensive experience in Chinese taxes, including but not limited to individual income tax, corporate income tax, value added tax and customs duty. She has helped multinational companies in setting up investment structure, identifying and addressing tax issues arising from ongoing operations, and providing tax advices on restructuring planning and implementation, as well as repatriation of profits from China. She holds degrees of BSc and MSc in Accounting and Finance at the University of Birmingham and is also a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.
Experience
Cynthia Zhou joined the firm in 2012, since then, she focuses on the tax advisory services and now she is a principal associate in the tax department of Shanghai office.
She has extensive experience in Chinese taxes, including but not limited to individual income tax, corporate income tax, value added tax and customs duty. She mainly advises foreign investors on forms of investment (i.e., foreign investment enterprise, joint venture, representative office, branch), choice of location (i.e., special zone vs. non-special area), desirable holding structures (i.e., appropriate holding vehicle in the light of treaty benefits), and tax implications in connection with setting up foreign investment enterprises in China.
She has helped multinationals identify and address tax issues arising from ongoing operations (e.g., applying tax preferential policies, discussion and negotiation with Chinese tax authorities etc.,), and provide tax advices on restructuring planning and implementation, as well as repatriation of profits from China.
Before joining Garrigues, she had worked in KPMG Advisory (China) Limited as a tax consultant.
