Garrigues adds a litigation and arbitration practice to its offering in Peru with the hiring of a five-strong team
Garrigues has bolstered its Lima office with the incorporation of a team of five highly-regarded lawyers to establish its litigation and arbitration practice in Peru. The team, joining from Benites, Forno & Ugaz, is led by Hugo Forno and Melissa Núñez.
With the incorporation of an area of such relevance for the firm at a global level, Garrigues continues the process of consolidation of both its Lima office and its Latin American practice; it already has litigation and arbitration areas in the offices of Bogota and Santiago de Chile.
Hugo Forno, with more than thirty years’ experience in business law, was a founding partner of his previous law firm. Throughout his career, he has acted as arbitrator in numerous proceedings and held several positions, such as secretary general of the National Foreign Investment and Technologies Commission (CONITE), the Consumer Protection Commission of the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (INDECOPI) and advisor to several commissions for the reform of the Peruvian Civil Code. He also has extensive academic experience as a professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and Universidad del Pacífico, among other top tier universities, and has authored several publications, particularly in relating to contracts and civil law. His professional experience and knowledge have earned him a well-founded recognition as an authority in the legal market, particularly with respect to contracts and civil law.
Melissa Núñez has extensive professional litigation experience, with a particular emphasis in construction matters, having spent the last 5 years as the lead partner of the civil litigation practice at her previous firm. After graduating in law from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, she studied a Master’s Degree in Corporate Law and Dispute Resolution at Erasmus University Rotterdam (The Netherlands).
Both professionals have been recognized by the main international legal directories in the course of their respective careers.
The inclusion of Hugo Forno, Melissa Núñez and their team bolsters the Peru office and reinforces Garrigues’ commitment to offering its clients a comprehensive legal offering and excellence in each of the main areas of business law.
Javier Ybáñez, partner head of Garrigues’ Latin American practice, stressed “the importance of these new inclusions which, on the one hand, complete Garrigues’ offering in Peru serving all areas of business law and, on the other hand, reinforce Garrigues’ litigation practice in the region, enabling us to handle local and international litigation and arbitration proceedings in various Latin American countries”.
Hugo Forno and Melissa Núñez expressed their satisfaction for joining Garrigues, an internationally recognized firm, and for becoming a part of the prestigious team at the Lima office, as well as a regional and global platform, which will undoubtedly enable them to expand their practice and provide an improved service to clients.
In Latin America, Garrigues has offices in Lima, Bogotá, Santiago de Chile, Mexico City and São Paulo. At the end of 2017, the firm received the Regional Client Service Award in Latin America, awarded annually by the UK directory Chambers & Partners, in recognition of the work of local and international firms operating in the region.
