'Novel foods': working towards increased protection for innovation in foods
The new EU Regulation 2015/2283 on novel foods will come into force on January 1, 2018. This legislation, which amends Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 and appeals Regulation (EC) 258/97 and Regulation (EC) 1852/2001 seeks to make it easier for companies to market new foodstuffs in the EU while at the same time maintaining high food safety standards for the protection of consumers.
Consumers care more and more about the food they eat and many food industry companies, in response, are investing in innovation, seeking to produce new foods which offer greater benefits from the nutritional perspective, such as food products enriched with omega 3, calcium, fiber, vitamins, etc.
The new regulations are another tool which is placed at the service of operators to protect innovation in the food industry and will provide an incentive for those companies which have invested time and resources in the development of a novel food. It is therefore of great interest to innovative businesses in this sector.
