
Alfonso specializes in litigation and alternative dispute resolution, as well as restructuring and insolvency matters and has extensive experience representing clients in highly complex lawsuits before federal and local courts in Mexico and in international arbitration proceedings related to the oil, electricity, manufacturing and automotive industries. Alfonso has broad experience advising companies in the energy sector, as a specialist in dispute resolution. He has extensive experience in constitutional protection (“amparo”) lawsuits. He has taken part in court proceedings abroad as well as in international arbitration proceedings, issuing opinions as an expert in Mexican law. Over his more than 20 years of professional experience, Alfonso has advised numerous banks in liquidation processes and has collaborated with the Mexican Bank Savings Protection Institute (IPAB) as external counsel in asset disposals and liquidations and property auctions, including due diligence reviews of the legal status of such properties. His practice includes involvement in commercial bankruptcy and restructuring proceedings before Mexican federal courts, as well as out-of-court restructuring transactions.
Experience
Alfonso López Lajud is a partner in the Dispute Resolution: Litigation and Arbitration, and Restructuring and Insolvency practices. He has a solid professional track record, having spent most of his career at Sánchez Devanny, where he achieved significant professional milestones. His experience includes merger cases, cartel procedures and regulatory compliance programs. He has represented a U.S. bank as a creditor in a commercial bankruptcy proceeding involving a prominent contractor from the oil industry in Mexico, achieving recognition of the client’s claim, and an international real estate developer in a claim for a real estate commission from the sale of real estate in Monterrey. He has also defended an international consulting firm in a multimillion-dollar damages lawsuit.
He took part in asset disposals and liquidations for the IPAB, coordinating property auctions and due diligence reviews. His experience in commercial arbitration includes proceedings before the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the Mexican Arbitration Center (CAM), the Mexican National Chamber of Commerce (CANACO) and the International Center for Dispute Resolution (ICDR-AAA), as well as the enforcement of arbitration awards in Mexico. He has represented clients in civil, commercial and family-related proceedings in several Mexican states, including the enforcement of foreign judgments and international procedural cooperation proceedings.
In the field of succession law, he has advised clients from the hotel sector in simultaneous proceedings in Mexico, the United States and Canada, and on the resolution of disputes between shareholders. His practice includes family and comparative law, including international successions and analysis of civil and commercial contracts. He has also taken part in insolvency and commercial bankruptcy proceedings before federal courts, and has assisted with restructuring transactions and creditor arrangement negotiations.
