Elisa Vicente Maravall is a senior associate in the international arbitration group forming part of the Disputes Resolution: Litigation and Arbitration department at Garrigues. She has extensive experience in international commercial transactions, advising clients on pre-litigation negotiation processes and on ad hoc and institutional arbitration proceedings before the most prestigious international institutions, under very diverse jursdictions, as well as on matters relating to bilateral investment agreements, providing advice to large companies, financial institutions and governments. Elsewhere, she has also acquired specific experience in international construction disputes and, in particular, in FIDIC contracts. Se holds a Double Degree in Law and Business Administration and an Executive Master's Degree in Business Law at Centro de Estudios Garrigues in collaboration with Harvard Law School. She has been recently ranked amongst the top 10 Best Young Lawyers of Spain of the V Edition of the Expansión Jurídico Awards. She is actively involved in the Spanish Arbitration Club, and currently chairs one of the working groups of the Dispute Boards Committee.
Experience
Eminently specialised in the area of arbitration, in her professional activity she has participated in arbitration and litigation related to arbitration practice, both nationally and internationally, of great complexity and importance, advising large companies, financial institutions and governments, before the most prestigious national and international institutions, and concerning a wide range of economic sectors, among which the areas of construction, banking and finance, mergers and acquisitions, energy (oil and gas), tourism and hotels, transport and maritime, as well as the protection of foreign investments, including:
- Highly complex arbitration proceedings, under a wide range of applicable laws, in relation to multi-million dollar claims arising in connection with flagship construction projects.
- Highly complex arbitration proceedings, under a wide range of applicable laws, in relation to the review of the price formula in LNG contracts.
- Highly complex court proceedings under Spanish law in relation to obtaining injunctive relief inaudita parte to stay guarantees and sureties against large companies and governmental entities.
- Highly complex court proceedings, under a wide range of applicable laws, in relation to the enforcement of arbitral awards.
In addition, she has provided recurring advice in connection with the execution of international multi-million dollar construction projects and, in particular, under FIDIC contracts, under which she has advised clients from the preparation of claims before the Engineer, to proceedings before a Dispute Adjudication Panel (DAB) and, ultimately, arbitration.
She has also advised governmental entities in connection with the preparation and drafting of Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs; bilateral treaties of a reciprocal nature containing measures and clauses aimed at protecting, at the level of international law, investments made by investors of each State Party in the territory of the other State Party).
Elisa is bilingual in Spanish and English, and has knowledge of French, German, Italian and Portuguese.
Lastly, she leads one of Garrigues' Think Tank groups and is a member of the firm's Editorial Committee. In addition, Elisa is actively involved in the Spanish Arbitration Club and, after being national and international co-chair of its -40 section, she currently chairs one of the working groups of the Dispute Boards Commission.

Teaching activity
Elisa is a regular speaker at national and international specialised forums, including the IPA and the CEA among others. She has also taught at several universities including, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Universidad de Navarra, IE University and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, both in Spanish and English. At Centro de Estudios Garrigues she is a collaborating lecturer on arbitration in the international courses offered by the Centre
Moreover, she has prepared the Universidad Pontificia de Comillas (ICADE, Madrid) team for the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot competition in Vienna and, on an annual basis, acts as arbitrator in both the competition and the Madrid Moot.
