Gonzalo Barrio is the partner in charge of the Administrative Law Department of the A Coruña office of Garrigues, where he has pursued his professional career since 2004. He previously worked as legal counsel at Universidad de A Coruña and was appointed substitute Magistrate of the Superior Court of Justice of Galicia.

He is specialized in administrative law and, among other fields, he is an expert in public sector engagement, disciplinary law, public subsidies, port law, public goods and jurisdiction of the administrative courts.

He frequently provides advice to public administrations, public sector entities and private companies. He has defended major companies of waste management, water supply, telecommunications and sports facilities management, intervening in outstanding special corporate transactions. He has also participated in many developed legal proceedings before the jurisdiction of the administrative courts and the jurisdiction accountant. He works in coordination with lawyers from other jurisdictions.

He has actively participated in a number of far-reaching legislative initiatives and various major projects relating to marine fisheries, industry, social services, voluntary, civil protection, civil service, transport and sport.

He has vast experience as a speaker at courses, conferences, workshops and national seminars organized by public bodies and specialist companies. He has also participated in the organization of various postgraduates acting both as co-director (Expert Postgraduate Course in Archives and Records Management in Local Government, organized by the Institute of Local Government Training and the Universidad de A Coruña) as academic secretary (Postgraduate Course in Law Judicial Institutions Postgraduate Course in Current Legal and Judicial Treatment organized by the Universidad de A Coruña, the Xunta de Galicia and the General Council of the Judiciary).

He has also served as secretary-academic of various national conferences on Sports Law (organized by the National Institute of Physical Education of Galicia), Fisheries Law (Law School of A Coruña) and Current Issues in Justice (organized by the Supreme Judicial Council and the Universidad de A Coruña) and various international events (First and Second International Conference on Fisheries Law, organized by the Foundation Pedro Barrié de la Maza).

Degree in Law and Doctor in Administrative Law from Universidad de A Coruña (extraordinary award).

He has extensive teaching experience, including as Professor in the Administrative Law Department at Universidad de A Coruña since 1997. Currently he combines his professional activity as a lawyer with his professorship on administrative law at Universidad de A Coruña.

Gonzalo Barrio was included in the ranking of Best Lawyers since 2013 in the administrative law area.

Author of various books (Sports jurisdiction. Legal analysis of sport in Galicia, published by Escola Galega de Administración Pública or The legal regime governing sea fishing, published by Marcial Pons), coauthor of monographs and manuals on administrative law (Spanish Administrative Law Manual, coordinated by Jaime Rodríguez-Arana) and several scholarly articles in professional journals such as Reforming the Law of Administrative Jurisdiction 1998 (Scientia iuridica), Considerations for future Fisheries Act (News of the European Union) or Legal Approach to Marine Fisheries (Maritime Law Yearbook).
