Javier Valderrama is a principal associate in Garrigues’ Tax Department, where his practice centers on providing tax advice both to domestic companies and to Spanish subsidiaries of listed and unlisted multinational groups. In particular, he provides advice on an ongoing basis to companies, mainly from the insurance, energy and telecommunications sectors. In addition, as a member of the group dedicated to advising on private equity transactions, he participates in company and/or business acquisition projects, as well as in business reorganizations. He holds a Degree in Law and in Business Administration from Universidad Pontificia de Comillas (ICADE E-3) and is a member of the Madrid Bar Association.
Experience
Javier Valderrama is a principal associate at Garrigues, having joined the firm in 2007.
In his professional practice, he provides ongoing advice to listed and unlisted entities from a broad range of sectors, notably including the insurance, energy and telecommunications sectors, offering tax and accounting solutions to the myriad day-to-day issues arising in the course of their business.
He regularly participates in the provision of advice on company and/or business sale and acquisition transactions, as well as on business reorganizations:
- Advice to private equity firms and industrial companies on company and/or business sale and purchase transactions, including due diligence processes, analysis of the potential tax implications of the transaction and review of the corporate documentation from a tax standpoint.
- Participation in the provision of advice on business restructuring transactions within domestic and international groups, analyzing their tax impact at the level of both the entities involved and the group to which they belong.
Lastly, he has extensive experience in advising on issues in tax inspections and audits by the Spanish tax authorities, both in their initial phase vis-à-vis the tax inspectors and participating, where applicable, in the subsequent administrative and judicial review proceedings.

- Executive Master's Degree in Business Law, Centro de Estudios Garrigues in association with Harvard Law School.
- Degree in Law and Business Administration, Universidad Pontificia de Comillas (ICADE E-3).
Teaching activity
Javier regularly collaborates in training courses organized by companies for their employees, as well as those conducted by Garrigues. He has also delivered a number of lectures at the Law School of Universidad Pontificia de Madrid.
