Portugal: Update of the meal allowance amount

Ordinance no. 280/2022, of November 18th was published in the Official Gazette (Diário da República), which updated the amount of the meal allowance due to Public Administration employees, from €4.77 to €5.20.
This update occurs six years after the last update and comes in the "current context of inflation that directly affects the purchasing power of employees" according to the ordinance.
Along with the increase of the subsidy, its exemption for the private sector will also increase, namely in terms of the personal income tax, which will be set at €5.20 if paid in cash, and €8.32 if paid through a meal card.
The update of the meal allowance is retroactive to October 1st, 2022.
